Michelmersh Donates a further 100,000 Bricks to UK Colleges

For the third year in a row, Michelmersh has fulfilled its commitment to the bricklayers of tomorrow by donating over 100,000 bricks through its “Pledge 100” initiative.

Michelmersh created its “Pledge 100” initiative in 2020 to support the training of the next generation of bricklayers and those eyeing a career in the construction industry after concerns were raised about a shortage in skilled labour. Michelmersh was happy to offer vital assistance to bricklaying colleges with the goal of revitalising the sector by helping to reduce the deficit caused by the purchase of supplies.

After a tumultuous few years due to COVID 19 in the construction industry, Michelmersh was happy to get back on track and provide bricks to institutions all over the UK the bricks they need to ensure students can learn the appropriate skills necessary to become the craftspeople of tomorrow. This year, Michelmersh was able to donate it’s bricks to 11 colleges across the UK.

Dave Mills, from Lyons & Annoot was responsible for bringing Pledge 100 Bricks to Stratford Building Crafts College and had this to say:

We are lucky to work with a supply chain which is forward thinking and sees how all elements of the construction process can benefit the future proofing of our industry. Michelmersh are a key part of our brick supply chain and they fulfil this criteria perfectly. As part of their Pledge 100 initiative they provide training establishments throughout the country with 10,000nr of their high quality bricks brands in order to assist the apprentices with having a quality product in which to use to learn. We are very lucky that as part of Pledge 100 we managed to apply for these bricks for our Training College partner, Building Crafts College Stratford which has benefited not just our own apprentices but also the other brickwork apprentices within the college. Our apprentices will tend to work with many Michelmersh brick products on our sites so familiarity of a high quality product is a great benefit. It’s a great scheme which benefits the industry immensely

Gary Pritchard, from Telford College, also had this to say:

We’ve been working closely with Michelmersh for some time now, and it’s fantastic to see a large company like this really taking care of the up-and-coming generations. “The students benefit hugely from this working partnership – not just through the materials which aids their studies, but by getting the chance to see a great variety of bricks that are used within the construction industry.

Learner manager for construction, Richard Joyce said:

Our students have gained valuable experience and knowledge from these visits to Michelmersh production factory and quarry. “It has helped them to fully grasp the underpinning knowledge for their online exam in Principles of Building’ and given them a broader baseline to progress within their courses in bricklaying and construction maintenance operations.

Michelmersh looks to continue its Pledge 100 Initiative for many years to come, in addition to donating bricks, Michlemersh also donates “The Guide to Succesful Brickwork”, Banners and CPD sessions to colleges. Although our list for 2023’s donations is nearly full, if you represent an institution that educates future brickworkers and would like to put your name forward for future years, please contact: marketing@mbhplc.co.uk
